Fire Safety from Awareness to Action
October marked Fire Safety Week, a national reminder of the importance of fire prevention in every workplace. Now we are into November and Fireworks Night approaches, it’s a timely moment to keep that awareness alive and turn it into action.
At ST Safety Services Ltd, we work with businesses across Lincolnshire and beyond to ensure fire safety isn’t just a tick-box exercise, it’s a living part of your workplace culture. Because when it comes to fire, prevention is always better than response.
Why It Matters
According to the Home Office, there were over 11,000 non-residential building fires in England last year, with electrical faults, cooking appliances, and arson among the leading causes. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) emphasises that every employer has a legal duty under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to assess fire risks and take appropriate precautions.
But beyond compliance, fire safety is about protecting people, property, and peace of mind.
Four Key Areas to Review This Month
We are encouraging all organisations to take a moment to review the basics:
- Fire Risk Assessment
Is your fire risk assessment current and reflective of how your building is used today? Changes in layout, staffing, or operations can all affect fire risk. HSE guidance recommends reviewing assessments regularly and immediately after any significant change.
- Fire Doors and Escape Routes
Are fire doors in good condition and escape routes kept clear? In an emergency, seconds count. Ensure all routes are clearly marked, unobstructed, and well-lit, and that fire doors close properly and aren’t propped open.
- Detection and Alarm Systems
Are your fire alarms and detection systems tested and maintained regularly? The British Standard BS 5839 recommends weekly testing of fire alarms and annual servicing. Don’t wait for a fault to find out your system isn’t working.
- Staff Training
Would your team know what to do if a fire broke out tomorrow? HSE best practice calls for clear fire procedures, regular drills, and training for all staff, including temporary and part-time workers. Confidence and clarity save lives.
